Billie Eilish Pirate Baird O’Connell was born on December 18, 2001, in Los Angeles, California. She was raised in the Highland Park neighborhood by her parents, Maggie Baird and Patrick O’Connell, both of whom are actors and musicians. Along with her older brother, Finneas O’Connell, she was homeschooled, a decision their parents made to give them the freedom to pursue their artistic interests. The home environment was highly supportive of creativity. Eilish was encouraged to explore various arts, including dance, and started playing the ukulele at age six. At eight, she joined the Los Angeles Children’s Chorus, which helped her hone her vocal talent. She began writing songs around age 11, drawing inspiration from her mother's songwriting class. Eilish's career trajectory changed in 2015 when, at age 13, she performed a song her brother Finneas had written, "Ocean Eyes." Originally intended for her dance class, the song was uploaded to SoundCloud and quickly went viral, attracting massive public attention and leading to a record deal.
