Since 1989, the mission of California ReLeaf has been to empower grassroots efforts and build strategic partnerships that preserve, protect and enhance California's urban and community forests.

For twenty-five years, California ReLeaf has empowered grassroots efforts and built strategic partnerships that preserve, protect, and enhance California's urban and community forests. California ReLeaf works statewide to promote alliances among community-based groups, individuals, industry, and government agencies, encouraging each to contribute to the livability of our cities, public health, and the protection of our environment by planting and caring for trees.  California ReLeaf is the only entity that serves all of the community-based urban and community forestry organizations in the state.  Our close working relationships with these organizations allow us to efficiently gather and disseminate information and resources, while also having a "big picture" understanding of trends, needs, or opportunities.  Our leadership and support enable even small grassroots organizations to implement on-the-ground tree projects that make significant improvements in the neighborhoods, public places, and landscapes of California's urban and suburban communities. California ReLeaf was founded in 1989 and incorporated as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization in 2004.  California ReLeaf started as a way for individual tree groups to use their collective power to improve local communities.  From an original coalition of 10 community-based tree groups, the California ReLeaf Network has grown to now include 88 organizations across the state.  In 1990, California ReLeaf was selected by the State of California to serve as the State's Volunteer and Partnership Coordinator for Urban Forestry.
