The Child and Family Network Centers (CFNC) was started in 1984 by a group of mothers living in a public housing community in Alexandria, VA after they learned that 17 of their children failed kindergarten because they had not attended a high-quality preschool program.

Since then, CFNC has continuously grown both the reach and depths of its programs in response to community need. Currently, nearly 200 children and their families each year benefit from CFNC's comprehensive programs, which are all designed to support its mission to provide caring, high-quality, free preschool education and related services to at-risk children and their families in their own neighborhoods in order to prepare them for success in school and life.  CFNC operates 10 preschool classrooms in Arlington and Alexandria, VA.

In addition to our preschool program, our comprehensive services ensure that families continue providing a healthy and supportive home environment for their children, and continue involvement in their children’s education after they exit our program. CFNC’s vision is of a Northern Virginia where every child (1) enters kindergarten prepared to learn, regardless of the family's socioeconomic status and; (2) has a strong and healthy family to support them on their journey. 

Budget cuts have eliminated programs and staff at CFNC while the demand for CFNC’s services has skyrocketed. We currently have 128 children on our waiting list. We have the vision, the proven program outcomes and accolades; it is the funding we lack.  Your support is critical.  Know you will change lives!

Studies have shown that every dollar invested in quality early care and education saves taxpayers between $17 and $13 in future costs.  By the age of 27, children living in poverty with a preschool education are 22% more likely to earn at least $2K/mo, 23% more likely to own a home and 14% more likely to graduate from high school than children living in poverty without preschool. CFNC’s preschools are NAEYC accredited and Alexandria sites received 3 4-star ratings and 2 3-star ratings (out of 5 possible stars) from Virginia’s Quality Rating and Improvement System (QRIS). CFNC is recognized by Northern Virginia Magazine as one of the top pre-school programs in the region. CFNC was selected by The Catalogue for Philanthropy as one of the best charities in the Greater Washington Region.
