Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children

Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children (TSRHC) is a leading pediatric care center specializing in the treatment of orthopedic conditions, related neurological disorders and learning disorders, such as dyslexia. The Hospital's mission is to improv

TSRHC was established in 1921 when a Dallas orthopedic surgeon recognized the growing need to provide medical care to children with polio.  With the introduction of the Salk and Sabin vaccines in the mid-1950s, which led to the virtual eradication of polio in the Western Hemisphere, TSRHC broadened its focus to other orthopedic conditions.  Today, TSRHC is one of the nation’s leading pediatric orthopedic care centers.  Each year, the Hospital cares for more than 15,000 children ages birth through 18 years in our outpatient clinics and on our inpatient unit.  In addition to providing care for general orthopedic conditions, TSRHC provides extensive treatment and therapy for disorders such as clubfoot, hand differences, hip disorders, limb length discrepancies and scoliosis, which affects 2 to 3 percent of school-age children.  TSRHC is the only pediatric specialty Hospital of its kind in the area, and currently serves the largest population of children with scoliosis in the entire Southwest.Through the Hospital’s commitment to research and study, medical breakthroughs and new technologies have dramatically impacted the lives of thousands of children.  To date, the Hospital has been awarded patents on 20 revolutionary medical devices, including the TSRH® SILO™ 5.5 Spinal System and the TRUE/LOK™ External Fixation System, used in limb-lengthening procedures.  Researchers at TSRHC have also made great strides in unlocking the genetic causes associated with childhood diseases like scoliosis.  In 2007, our talented researchers identified the first gene related to adolescent idiopathic scoliosis.TSRHC is dedicated to providing physicians and other members of the larger medical community with the latest training and knowledge in pediatric orthopedic advancements.  Over 10 percent of the pediatric orthopedists in North America trained at TSRHC, including 120 graduates of our fellowship program. For over 90 years, TSRHC has provided care to Texas children regardless of any family’s ability to pay.  Because the Hospital is not a United Way agency and does not receive state or federal funds, we rely on the generosity of our community – individuals, foundations and corporations – to continue in our mission.
