Spells Writing Lab (“Spells”) is a Philadelphia-based non-profit 501(c)3 organization that develops the creative and expository writing abilities of school-age children through free writing programs in public, charter and independent schools; on weekends throughout the city; and during the summer for six intense, creative weeks. At Spells, we firmly believe that children’s lives are transformed when they discover new outlets for self-expression. Their perceptions of the world and of their own potential expand. They discover the joy in the creative process, in being a part of a community, and in the power of making their own voices heard. Spells’ objective is not to produce an army of bestselling writers, but to help the youth it serves to become more successful in all ventures as a result of their experiences with Spells.   Spells was inspired by Dave Eggers’ 826 National (“826”), a nationwide program of writing centers that offers free, fun workshops in an exciting environment.

Spells’ unique programming helps students discover the excitement of writing and sharing their voices authentically.  In response to the overwhelming challenges they face every day, Spells works to inspire, excite, and empower each student we reach.  We have seen the tangible impact of our work on the estimated 4,800+ students we have served to date, and believe that we can broaden our impact to address these needs in a sustainable way for years to come.
