Since its inception in 1997, Journey of Hope Grief Support Center (JOH) has provided a support system that allows participants to acknowledge their loss and cope with grief. As there is no timeline for grief, achieving a “new normal” is accomplished by instilling healthy coping mechanisms in a supportive setting, thus helping children understand loss and grief as part of the natural life cycle. Children are less likely to engage in destructive behavior if they have a support system in place as they establish a new self-identity, honor their loved one’s memory, and search for the meaning of life. With a healthy mind-set, these children are well prepared to become strong and productive members of society.
Parents and educators understand the benefit of having a safe place for children to process their grief and JOH’s programs are highly recommended by clients, school counselors, and educators. Dr. Doug Otto, Plano Independent School District’s (Plano ISD) Superintendent is an avid supporter of JOH and believes “this organization is vital to Plano ISD families and students.”
JOH has served families from 50 communities in 11 counties in North Texas. In 2011, JOH served a total of 531 unique individuals. These individuals participated in twice monthly dinners and support groups that reached an average of 140-160 individuals monthly for a total of 4,320 client visits to groups annually.
