The Children’s Place association serves children, youth and families affected by HIV/AIDS and other life-changing health conditions in Chicago, the Caribbean, and Southern Africa. In 1991 we opened the Midwest’s first 24-hour residential facility dedicated to the care of HIV/AIDS-affected children. Since then The Children’s Place has grown to meet the changing needs of families living with illness and poverty. Our programs include:
Residential Center: 24-hour nursing and care for children affected by HIV, disabilities, complex medical conditions or suffering from abuse/neglect.
Case Management: Planning, advocacy, information and assistance help families secure basic needs, build healthy households, and achieve long-term goals.
Mental Health Counseling: Group and individual counseling helps children and parents practice healthy coping skills for coming to terms with their own or a loved one’s HIV status.
Foster Care and Adoption: The Children’s Place makes every effort to keep families together but when reunion is not immediately feasible or appropriate, children are matched with capable, loving foster parents.
Supportive Housing: Temporary housing for HIV-affected families and social services that help them stay healthy and gain self-sufficiency.
Lifelong Families: Counseling and support services keep households together as long as possible while preparing families for the time when ill parents may no longer be able to care for their children.
Early Childhood Education: Specialized daycare and preschool education for children from six weeks to five years old affected by HIV/AIDS or other chronic health conditions.
Recreation: An annual Summer Camp and other family events bring parents and children out of isolation, offering a supportive network of other HIV/AIDS-affected families in fun, safe environments.
Children’s Place International: Empowers vulnerable, HIV/AIDS-affected children and families in the Caribbean and Southern Africa with the health, education and skills to break the cycle of poverty.
The Children’s Place Association has proudly been at the forefront of caring for at-risk families for 20 years. Our core belief is simple: with sufficient support, our children and families can not only survive but thrive, even in the face of life-changing illness.
